Earlier this year, I was shown an AI-written blog post about "How To Make A 32 Bit Wine Bottle." About 80% of Google search results are now AI-written blog posts, but this one's notable, because it's a great illustration of a failure mode unique to LLMs.

The chatbot that wrote this repeatedly gets confused between "wine" (the drink) and "WINE" (the Linux thing.) It attempts to mash these topics together and does so with grammatically plausible sentences that are, however, complete nonsense.

Hello Mastodon.

I'm writing a survey on how researchers in heavy-compute fields (AI/ML mostly) are debating what green research methods mean for them.

I'm mostly sticking to papers and commentaries, but I'm wondering if there's any exciting and more informal debates/grey literature I'm missing. If anyone knows of spicy/flopped conference resolutions, provocative white papers, or general controversies, I'd be grateful for leads.

(I don't exclusively live for drama, but drama is often analytically insightful!)

I think that the biggest reason I believe that we need universal basic income is so that people always have an out. A bad relationship, a bad job, a bad situation, even discovering you've overrotated on something that's turning into a scam or a cult. You should always be able to walk away without fearing destitution.

Inktober day 2: Maybe it was a bit too challenging to render a glass effect on a realistic heart shape on a small piece of paper with just a bic pen.

I love Cloudflare and the fact that most internet traffic goes through them, it's definitely great and not antithetical to the concepts of the Internet

So a poll I've seen boosted around is showing that of about 5.5k fedi users polled a good 42% use Linux.

So that made me curious.

Distro families! Which do you primarily use?

Please boost for reach, am very curious.

EDIT: To answer a frequent question, this is intended to be mostly about what you use on personal/desktop/laptop machines, though if you just use Linux for servers and use something else on your personal machines, I don't want to exclude you!

EDIT: To answer another frequent question, yes Guix counts under the NixOS choice. I'd honestly forgotten about it. I'd also forgotten about Void Linux entirely, sorry about that Void users.

#Linux #poll
44% Debian/Debian based (Ubuntu, MX Linux, Mint, etc)
10% RedHat/RedHat based (Fedora, RHEL, CentOS, etc)
22% Arch/Arch based (Manjaro, EndeavourOS, etc)
3% openSUSE/openSUSE based (GeckoLinux, etc)
2% Gentoo/Gentoo based (Calculate, Nova, ChromiumOS, etc)
0% Slackware/Slackware based (Austrumi, Porteus, etc)
0% Mandriva/Mandriva based (Mageia, etc)
0% Alpine
5% NixOS
1% Something else
0% Something else and I'm offended you didn't list it and am going to whine in your comments
7% I don't use linux
